School Requirements

The Maryland Virtual Learning Opportunities Program (MVLO) offers online courses for high school credit in collaboration with the local school systems.  The teaching is conducted online with the teacher physically separated from the student.  The teacher communicates with student online and via the telephone and a School Site Coordinator provides site-based support.  MVLO is not a school and does not offer a complete high school diploma program online.  The credit earned by taking an MVLO course is entered into the student’s record by the local public high school or school system.  Students may take a course through MVLO only with the permission of the local system and the school principal.  Each participating school will be responsible for coordinating the following MVLO services at the local school:

  • Work with staff at the school to determine whether the desired online course is appropriate.
  • Coordinate securing of student services.
  • Coordinate proctoring of MVLO exams.
  • Support and monitor provisions for technical assistance.
  • Oversee student access to necessary course materials and functionality.

The school will identify a teacher or guidance counselor to act as an on-site Mentor to the online student.  The Mentor will meet regularly with the student, monitor progress, and help resolve any difficulties.  Mentors should also communicate with parents/guardians with any questions or concerns.  Mentors will have access to the student's online progress reports.
To enroll students in Maryland Virtual Learning Opportunities courses, you will need to complete the Registration Procedures.  Make sure to complete each step in order so as not to delay your registration!  The required registration forms are also provided in the table below.
